Baggage car BMCX 9646 was built in 1957 by the National Steel Car Company for the Canadian National
Railways, and was used in various trains such as the "Super Continental" until 1983, when VIA Rail (which
took over most of Canada's passenger train services in 1978) sold it at auction in 1983 to Global
Communications as a part of a general disposal of excess equipment. Global operated the car in excursion
trains over the Michigan Northern Railroad. The Bluewater Michigan Chapter purchased the car from
Global in 1985.
Baggage car BMCX 9646 is constructed of carbon steel, weighs about 58 tons and has a baggage capacity
of 47 tons. Originally heated by a coal stove, the car was later converted to steam heat. The 32 volt DC
electrical system takes its power from an adjacent car via a trainline. This car now holds Bluewater's tools
and other equipment.
